This course provides an exploration of the creative and technical methods of sculpture with focus on the traditional processes. Emphasis is placed on developing basic skills as they pertain to three-dimensional expression in various media. Upon completion, students should be able to show competence in variety of sculptural approaches. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a pre-major and/or elective course requirement.

ART 283-S01 Ceramics I

Prerequisites: none

This course provides an introduction to three-dimensional design principles using the medium of clay. Emphasis is placed on fundamentals of forming, surface design, glaze application, and firing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate skills in slab and coil construction, simple wheel forms, glaze technique, and creative expression. This course will focus on centering clay on the wheel and throwing basic forms. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a pre-major and/or elective course requirement.

ART 284 S01 Ceramics II

Prerequisites: ART 283

This course covers advanced hand building and wheel techniques. Emphasis is placed on creative expression, surface design, sculptural quality, and glaze effect. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a high level of technical competence in forming and glazing with a development of three-dimensional awareness. This course will focus on advancing students ability with wheel thrown forms. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

ART 286 S01 Ceramics IV

Prerequisites: ART 285

This course provides the opportunity for self-determned work in sculpture and functional ceramics. Emphasis is

placed on developing the technical awareness of glaze materials, glaze formulation, and firing techniques necessary to fulfill the student's artistic goals. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of materials and techniques necessary to successfully create original projects in the clay medium. This class will provide the opportunity for students to advance their skills in making utilitarian wheel thrown pottery. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.

PCD 111 S01 Advanced Craft Design (3D)

Prerequisites: PCD 110

This course explores the conceptual process of design as applied to the three-dimensional form. Emphasis is placed on solving three-dimensional design problems which are material, function, site, or client specific. Upon completion, students should be able to apply an enhanced understanding of the relationship between design concept, process, and product in three-dimensional form.

PCS 110A S01 Intro to Metal Sculpture

Prerequisites: PCS 112

This course introduces the process and design of metal sculpture for the craftsman. Topics include design of metal sculpture, layout, construction, and finishing. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to design and construct metal sculptures.

PCS 210 S01 Intro to Clay Sculpture

Prerequisites: none

This course introduces various techniques of making clay sculpture, including clay modeling, carving, and forming clay with and without the use of armatures. Topics include the artistic concepts of form, rhythm, flow, movement, color and its relation to light. Upon completion, students should be able to form well-designed sculptures demonstrating artistic concepts as applied to ceramics.

Designed to familiarize students with the steps required to successfully fire a 100 cubic

foot salt kiln (gas), work includes glazing cone 10 ware, making wadding, kiln wash, kiln prep, loading and firing. Successful completion will prepare student for a life-long love of salt-fired pottery.

Bring cone 10 bisque ware, personal glazing tools, gloves, dust mask, protective eye wear, two 4-pound boxes granulated salt.

Experimenting with Cone 6 Reduction Glazes, Instructor, Joyce Bryan

Students will research and develop cone 6 glazes for reduction firing. Students must have basic clay knowledge to develop a personal palette of glazes.

Sculpture, Painting Exhibition

Central Carolina Community College Sculpture Program's lead instructor, Phillip Ashe, is exhibiting his latest body of work in the PAF Gallery at the North Carolina Arts Incubator, 223 North Chatham Avenue, Siler City, North Carolina 27344, opening November 18, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. The exhibition, "Syntheticism", will run through December 23.

His contemporary sculpture and paintings are a culmination of the last four years while at CCCC and are an exploration of odd juxtapositions of material, both synthetic and natural, as metaphor.

Phillip received his B.F.A. in Sculpture from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina and his M. F. A. in Art from University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He began his teaching career as an adjunct at Mitchell Community College teaching sculpture, design, and ceramics while gaining experience as a practicing sculptor. In 2007 he became lead instructor at Central Carolina Community College's Sculpture Program.

On August 19 Central Carolina Community College Sculpture program will feature an exhibit of stone work by students in the Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture courses. The gallery is located at 138 North Chatham Avenue in downtown Siler City, North Carolina and is open 6:00 to 9:00 the third Friday of every month during the Art Walk sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Incubator. At other times visitors are welcome Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday 9:30am to 4:00pm.

"I have really enjoyed stone carving. When carving the black soapstone, I used curved shapes as well as straight edges to create variety in the piece. I left raw edges at the top and bottom of the stone to provide contrast with the smooth areas. I especially liked finishing the piece; smoothing the surface to bring out all the natural color and grain lines in the stone.

“I had a number of pieces of raw stone to choose from. I chose this one because it was very different from all of the others. Narrow and wedge shaped. It really did call out to me because of that difference.

“After I had made my choice I set the stone on a table and just looked at it for a while walking around it, studying from all angles. I knew that I wanted to leave areas of the natural surface untouched. I was going to treat the worked surfaces to bring out the deep luster of the stone, to help create an even more striking contrast between the worked and natural surfaces.

“I finally decided that I wanted to make the piece seem bigger than it was, to add volume, to let the inside out. I wanted to be able to see more than what was there, so I decided to open up the piece, but I wanted to do it in a way that would make the inner space as much of a focal point as the exterior.

“The connection between the two sides was a way of joining all the surfaces together in one continuous flow and directing the eye to move around and through the final work.”

“What I love about working with stone is how I can get completely lost in it. When I am working with clay or metal, the process includes creating lots of small individual components and building them on top of each other to create depth and design. Like a chess game, my mind is constantly thinking at least three or four moves ahead as I build my way to the finished sculpture.

“With stone carving, the process is strictly subtractive and to create texture and layers, I have to take away from the stone. However, I only take what the stone will give me and I determine this by following its natural shape and grain. The result is very different from what I’m used to because I’ve given in to my medium almost completely. The result is very organic and I like to think that the stone’s actual soul is now willingly exposed for the world to see.”

Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate a knowledge of materials and techniques necessary to successfully create original projects in the clay medium. This course covers the important elements of designing and producing utilitarian pottery such as bowls, mugs, plates, casseroles, stemware, and bottles. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a pre-major and/or elective course requirement.

PCC 121-S01 Handbuilding I

This course introduces students to the basic hand building processes of creating three-dimensional functional and sculptural vessels in clay. Emphasis is placed on using design elements and principles for the purpose of forming and decorating ceramic vessels. Upon completion students should be able to demonstrate skills in pinch, coil, and slab methods as well as function and creative expression.

PCC125-S01 Clay Casting Prerequisite: PCC 110 or ART 283

This course introduces the different ways of shaping ceramic items, leading to the use of plaster molds and process of “slip- casting”. Topics include model and mold-making, block and case mastermold, gypsum, resins, clay selection, mineral
additives, flocculation, thixotrophy, deflocculation, rheology, specific gravity, and casting rates. Upon completion students should be able to cast in molds, remove, de-seam and clean greenware maintain molds, and layout studios.

PCC 132-S01 Glaze Formulation

This course provides an in-depth study of glazes used on pottery. Emphasis is placed on performing glaze tests, analyzing glazes, mixing a variety of glazes, and correcting glaze faults. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of glaze chemical qualities and formulate new glazes.

PCD 110-S01 Intro to Craft Design

This course introduces the basic principles, elements, vocabulary, and process of two-dimensional design within the context of professionally produced crafts. Emphasis is placed on general design concepts and vocabulary, conceptual thinking, design process application, and observational skills. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate enhanced observational skills and a working knowledge of design vocabulary, concepts, and processes.

PCD 211-S01 Professional Craft Design (Marketing)

Prerequisite: PCD 110—This course covers the development of customer- or site-influenced design and the development and design of craft marketing promotional materials. Topics include customer-guided, site-specific, and other design influences and development and design of logos, hang tags, web sites, brochures, and related promotional materials. Upon completion, students should be able to design within site, customer, or other limitations and complete a design package for their personal marketing needs.

PCS 112-S01 Welding for Artists

This course is an introduction to the proper equipment and tools of the metal shop and welding methods for the artist. Topics include welding, cutting, forging, fabricating and finishing, and studio safety. Visiting Artist Joseph Sand

Once a year we invite a guest artist from the surrounding community to show in our gallery in order to expose students to varied styles and media, which helps fulfill the mission of the gallery. Beginning on July 15 (Downtown Art Walk, 6:00 to 9:00pm) our visiting artist will be potter, Joseph Sand.

Joseph (b. 1982, Austin, MN) trained as a sculptor at the University of Minnesota, received a B.F.A. in 2006. During his undergraduate courses, he studied for one year in Italy, followed by another year in England, after receiving a very competitive, college-wide scholarship. While in England, he worked alongside many prolific potters, including Svend Bayer and Clive Bowen, which heavily influenced his direction as an artist, taking up functional pottery as a means of personal expression. He completed a three-year apprenticeship with Mark Hewitt in 2009. While finishing his apprenticeship at Hewitt Pottery, Joseph was featured in Craft in America. He now resides in Randleman, North Carolina. His work combines the styles of traditional, Southern alkaline glazeware and East Asian design, among others. Using a wood-fired kiln, both salt- and ash-glazed wares are produced.

“I aspire to create items that will adorn people’s homes that they can enjoy, whether they use it or just appreciate it as a piece of art. Bringing people happiness through my work plays a central role in my artistic endeavor. Currently, I am focusing my efforts on making utilitarian ware along with larger, decorative items. I select local clay that I know will react well and glazes that will be enhanced by slips to create beautiful patterns in a salt-fired atmosphere. Special attention is paid to the placement of pieces throughout the kiln to achieve the desired results. By carrying on a tradition created by Bernard Leach, passed down to Michael Cardew, and then to Mark Hewitt, who has shared it with me, I am looking at the past, adding all the skills and ideas I’ve been taught, creating something new and interesting, of beauty and vibrancy.

“Currently, I am working on a series of new glazes showing an array of colors and texture that will enhance the pottery forms that I make. Utilizing my newly created test glaze kiln, which was partly funded using a grant that I received from the United Arts Council of Greater Greensboro, I have tested numerous glazes in search of those select few that really make my pots exemplary.”

Joseph Sand Pottery property near Randleman, North Carolina is now up and running, and Joseph is making functional and sculptural pottery full-time. Most recently, Joseph was a recipient of the Ella Fountain Pratt Emerging Artist Award through the Durham Arts Council, which provided funding towards the construction of his kiln. Kiln opening sales are held three times each year, typically in April, August, and December. Otherwise, the pottery is open by appointment only.

Emma Skurnick, "Heirloom Series No. 3"

Central Carolina Community College Student Art Gallery in downtown Siler City, North Carolina presents its annual faculty show June 17 through July 12 at 138 North Chatham Avenue, Siler City, North Carolina. Faculty in the Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture program show examples of their work while the students are out for the summer. This eclectic showing of works of art ranges from functional pottery to contemporary sculpture.

Faculty members participating in this show are:

Phillip Ashe has a BFA in sculpture, a BFA in Art Education from East Carolina University, and an MFA in sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He has been a sculptor for 20 years working primarily in stone, cast metals, clay, and plastic. Besides sculpture he makes sculptural hand-built vessels which are being displayed in the current faculty show. These lidded vessels have stamped surfaces accented by underglaze, then it is Raku fired. “I am interested in simplicity of form and visual impact over function.”

Joyce Bryan has a BS in Art Education from Moore Institute of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has also studied at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and Peter’s Valley in New Jersey. She has done numerous workshops up and down the East coast. Her work is held in public and private collections worldwide. She is a functional potter for preparation, cooking, and serving of food and also produces the occasional sculpture. Her high-fired stoneware has a distinctive palette of colors. She works with at sense of humor and enjoys teaching and sharing 40 years of gathered information, and greatly enjoys the stimulation from her students.

Rich Goldberg, MFA in studio arts, University of North Carolina, Greenville, is preparing an exhibit in the ICFF in New York next May with an LED designer. Rich is currently working on a synthesis of his light screens adapted for flat screen monitors using hand build and CNC processes with an eye towards light production. “I attempt to connect the dots between sculpture and craft with my body of work. I enjoy crafting design/craft/sculpture with an eye towards reductive design, meaning it as few moving parts and is understated. My inspiration from other artists of renown would be Brancusi, Noguchi, and Wharton Esherick, to throw in a woodworker, and process inspiration would be boatbuilding and the associated forms. ”

Emma Skurnick, BFA, is a scientific illustrator and instructor in design, a full-time artist as well as a teacher of the Art Marketing class at CCCC. Her paintings have been exhibited nationally and published internationally. She received her undergraduate degree in Fine Art from Binghamton University in New York, and her graduate certification in Science Illustration from the University of California, Santa Cruz. With illustrations appearing in publications such as American Scientist Magazine, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s 21st Century Gardening series, and paintings commissioned by the North Carolina Aquarium and the North Carolina Wildlife Commission, her work is widely viewed.

With paintings in watercolor and acrylic that focus on plants and animals native to North Carolina, she comments, “I try to introduce a note of humor - or humanity - into my paintings. I hope that this might inspire a moment of rapport and understanding between the viewer and the subject. By making modest animals large - by painting a toad or a songbird three feet tall - perhaps I can startle people into appreciating the world we tread under hurrying footsteps.”

Jennifer Siegel, AAS, Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture from Central Carolina Community College, also studied at Anderson University in South Carolina. A developing talent, Jennifer lives for her next sketch. She is constantly inspired by the open flame of life. She teaches in both the CCCC degree program and in continuing education, as well as the Cary Arts Center. Jennifer played a major role in the publication of her mentor’s first book, Introducing Ceramics: The Complete Guide, by Daniel Rhode.

She has taught multiple classes including Glaze Formulation, Wheel-throwing, salt firing, large pots, and hand building. Jennifer serves as secretary of the Moncure Museum of Art where she enjoys working in cast metals.

Her work includes mostly functional pots that are substantial, graceful, and bold. While influenced by mostly Asian forms, with a Germanic tradition of salt-fired ware, Jennifer has evolved her own contemporary style. Her commission work is personalized to the customer. “I enjoy making things that honor someone specifically, such as memorial pieces, plaques, urns—even for cherished family pets.”

Darlene Brady, a Chatham County native, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. A retired high school art teacher from Chatham Central High School, she has also taught K-8. She is a ceramist and instructor in continuing education.

“As a child growing up in rural North Carolina, I remember the thrill of sculpting little clay blocks from the red clay found in a ditch after a big rain. It was fascinating that the clay would hold the shape that I had given it with my tiny hands. As an adult, with the aid of a potter’s wheel and a few simple tools, I am reliving the fascination of modeling clay. As an adult I create functional and decorative pieces, to which I often add three-dimensional designs. My designs are inspired by North Carolina nature and landscapes. On clay vases, I add grapes, pine cones, or dogwoods. On jugs, I create a scene with a log cabin nestled in the woods or I create a coastal landscape with a lighthouse or seashells. These are memorable scenes of from my childhood.

“To complete the surface, I accent the decorative areas with a matte earthy brown stain. Then, I contrast the stain by applying a shiny color to the rest of the piece. The two textures complement one another and bring out the natural characteristics of the clay. The finished piece is rustic and quiet. It will blend with its environment, creating a comfortable beauty, just like nature.”

Raymond Edwards is an experienced, traditional potter currently enrolled in the CCCC sculpture AAS degree program. He is an instructor in continuing education. He also has a two-year certification from Randolph Community College. He has studied with Sid Luck of Seagrove, North Carolina and has taught numerous classes and workshops. He resides in a community of potters. He does functional and decorative pottery and is now the new proprietor of Old Gilliam Mill Pottery in Carbonton, North Carolina.

CORA Food Pantry in Pittsboro and CCCC’s Natural Chef Culinary Program and Pottery/Sculpture Department are joining forces to raise money to help feed the hungry in Chatham County. There will be a bowl making work shop Friday, March 18, 5:00 to 8:00pm and Saturday, March 19, 1:00 to 5:00pm at the CCCC clay studio, 138 N. Chatham Avenue, in Siler City.

Local handcrafted bowls and delicious soups will be available for purchase to raise funds for CORA. Attendees can choose a beautiful bowl donated by a local potter to use and take home after the event. A variety of healthy soups and breads will be served, donated by area restaurants or prepared by future chefs in the CCCC kitchen. Seating will be available on the patio outside the Natural Chef Café. Guests can also enjoy music and pottery throwing demonstrations at the event. All ages are welcome.

All proceeds from this event will be donated to CORA, a non-profit organization based in Pittsboro that annually distributes a week’s worth of meals to about 14,000 residents of Chatham County, 60% of whom are children and older people. CORA also provides nutritious weekday meals during the summer to children who rely on free school meals during the regular school year. CORA funded by private donations, public and private grants, community food drives and volunteer-organized special events such as Empty Bowls.

CORA is a community organization of volunteers who donate their time helping clients shop for food, stocking shelves, picking up food from local sources and helping with special events. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Deborah Motter, a student in CCCC’s Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture program, was commissioned by the city of Sanford to carve a likeness of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The 3’x 4’ relief sculpture is carved into a wall of brick. It stands at the top of a triangular column of brick that is the focal point for the new park to honor Dr King.

The park, located on South Horner Boulevard in Sanford, North Carolina, also has park benches, a large brick planter, three flag poles, and a brick-paved walkway. Paver bricks are offered for purchase that may have a family name or short saying carved into them before they are installed into the walkway.

Deborah Motter has been sculpting for many years. She chose to enroll into CCCC’s Professional Arts &Crafts: Sculpture program to enhance and broaden her skills and learn how to better market her talents. She reports,” The experience at CCCC has been quite stimulating. I’ve learned things that I had not even considered before that definitely impact my sculpture design and material choices. It has been a wonderful learning experience and I also look forward to graduating this May.”

PCD 111-S01 Advanced Craft Design—This course explores the conceptual process of design as applied to the three-dimensional form.
