Continuing Education Classes Summer 2012

Continuing Education Classes

Beginning Wheelthrowing, Instructor, Raymond Edwards
Monday nights 6—9pm.  Clay Studio. This class will provide hands-on learning of basic pottery skills in a structured, supportive, fun setting. Students must bring  tools and a dust mask; beginner’s kits cost around $11.00.  Cost of course $80.  Materials fee $10. includes 25 lbs. clay & glaze, to be paid at registration
First Session:  May 14 through June 25 (6 weeks) CCCC closed May 28.
Second Session July 2 through July 30 (5 weeks).
 
Intermediate Wheelthrowing, Instructor, Raymond Edwards
Thursday nights 6—9pm.  Clay Studio.  This class will challenge students with some wheel experience by providing more time to practice and improve skills and techniques. 
Cost of course $65. Materials fee $10  to be paid at registration.  Bring clay tools and a dust mask.
First Session:  May 17 through June 21 (6 weeks).
Second Session,  June 28 through August 9 (6 weeks) CCCC closed July 5.


Advanced Wheelthrowing, Instructor, Darlene Brady
Tuesdays 10am—2pm.  Clay Studio.  Students will explore new forms, design techniques and  methods of glazing.  Bring clay tools and dust mask.
Cost of course $65.  Materials fee $10. includes 25 lbs. clay & glaze, to be paid at registration. 
First Session:  May 15 through June 12 (5 weeks).
Second Session:  June 26 through July 31 (5 weeks), no class July 10.

Clay Open Studio
Tuesdays 2:00—6:00pm.  Clay Studio.  Students bring supplies.
Open to current curriculum students and those registered in Continuing Education classes.
Cost $70.00.
May 22 through July 10 (8 weeks).


Beginner MIG Welding, Art & Hobby, Instructor, Kevin Kuhnel
Mondays 6:00—9:00pm.  Siler City Center (new facility).  Students will learn about safety, use of shop tools, and basic welding techniques working with welding equipment.  Bring leather apron, welding gloves, and safety glasses.  Steel toed boots preferred.
Cost of course $121.25.  Materials cost to student $40. to be paid at registration.
May 14 through July 30 (10 weeks), no class May 28, June 4.

Metal Art, Sculpture and Function (Advanced) Instructor, Kevin Kuhnel
Wednesdays 6:00—10:00pm.
Prerequisite:  one class or other experience in welding.  Learn about safety and use of shop tools for light cutting and welding of metals in the creation of steel sculptures with twists, turns and bronze highlights.
Bring:  welding apron, gloves, helmet, safety glasses.  Siler City Center. 
Cost $151.25.  Materials cost to student $45. to be paid at registration.
May 16 through August 1 (10 weeks).  No class June 6, July 4.
Joyce Bryan, Stoneware

Community Cone 10 Reduction Fire, Instructor, Joyce Bryan
Tuesdays, May 15 to June 19 (no class June 5), 5 weeks, 5:30 to 8:30pm.   June 12, 8:00am to 5:00pm.  Clay studio and Siler City Center. 
Calling all local potters to participate in CCCC's first cone 10 reduction fire in the Bailey kiln!  Bring your already-bisque-fired cone 10 pots and we will glaze and fire them. Talk pots, enjoy some good food and go home with nice looking pots to keep or share.
Cost of class $66.25.  Materials fee $10.00.




Introduction to Woodturning, Instructor, Bob Moffett
Mondays, 6:00 to 9:00, June 4 to June 25 (4 weeks), Siler City Center
Students will be introduced to woodturning, lathe safety, nomenclature, turning small projects and will develop skills as a woodturner.  Bring safety glasses.

Continuing Education Workshops

Raku:  Night Firing, Instructor, Raymond Edwards
Friday, May 18, noon to 10:00pm (4 weeks), SAGE Academy metal shop
Students in this workshop will enjoy the excitement of the colors of their hot ceramic pieces as they are revealed after firing.  Each will mix glazes, set up the kiln, and safely fire using the Raku kiln.  Bring bisqueware.
Cost of workshop:  $46.25.

Phillip Ashe, Encaustic
New Dimensions in Encaustics, Instructor, Phillip Ashe
Wednesdays, 6:00 to 9:00pm, June 13 through 27, 3 weeks
Students in this class will learn to manipulate encaustic paint medium both with and without pigment for the purpose of creating finished paintings and/or 2-dimensional mixed media.
